At 18:23 on July 3, 2023, the thermal power plant of MAEC-Kazatomprom LLP (Mangystau region) had an emergency shutdown of power unit 1 loaded to 130 MW.
This resulted in unacceptable overloading of 220 kV Uralsk-Atyrau-Mangistau transmission and, as a result, disconnection of the Mangistau and Atyrau power hubs from Zone West of Kazakhstan's UPS, resulting in disruption of power supply to consumers.
Furthermore, the Atyrau power plants, Atyrau TPP and KUS PGTPP, were affected.
At 19:22, the Atyrau power grid was synchronised with Zone West of Kazakhstan's UPS.
At 19:32, one of the two power lines supplying the Atyrau Refinery was energised.
Work is currently ongoing to eliminate consequences of the accident.
